At Durban Landscaping & Garden Maintenance, we believe great partnerships should create real impact — not just maintain sites, but build people. Our collaboration with C2A (Connecting2Ability) is one we’re incredibly proud of, and it continues to strengthen not only our operations, but the lives of those involved.

We reached out to Owen, C2A’s Business Manager, and Durban’s Operations Manager to talk about what meaningful employment truly looks like, how the partnership works in practice, and why inclusion is more than just a word at Durban.

What Does Meaningful Employment Really Look Like?

For C2A, meaningful employment is simple but powerful.

Meaningful employment means giving people with disabilities a chance to lead their best lives. Through paid employment, earning an income, and building friendships and workplace skills, our team members are empowered to fully participate in their communities and enjoy the same opportunities as everyone else,” Owen shared.

Through the partnership with Durban, meaningful employment means C2A team members are doing the same jobs as everyone else, using the same equipment, and feeling part of the wider team.

From Durban’s perspective, inclusion is embedded in daily practice.

In a real, day-to-day sense, inclusion at Durban means working as one team on site. Everyone is given meaningful work, clear direction, and the support needed to succeed. Opportunity comes through hands-on learning, shared responsibility, and building skills while contributing to high-quality outcomes.

How Has the Partnership Strengthened Team Culture?

According to Owen:

The Durban team demonstrates a strong understanding of our people as individuals and recognises the skills they bring. By working together to highlight those strengths in a mutually beneficial way, both organisations achieve the best outcomes.

Durban’s Operations Manager echoed this, noting that the partnership has strengthened the site culture through improved communication, respect, and teamwork.

Different strengths aren’t seen as barriers — they’re seen as assets. The collaboration has created a more supportive, inclusive environment where everyone understands their role and feels valued.

What Makes It Work?

Strong communication, structured routines, and close collaboration between Durban supervisors and C2A support staff have been critical to success.

Clear roles, consistent supervision, and flexibility ensure participants are supported while operational standards remain high.

As Owen explained, it’s about long-term growth, not short-term placement. Team members are matched to worksites that suit their skills and interests, recognising that each site offers unique opportunities and challenges.

Why Grounds Maintenance?

Grounds maintenance is a powerful pathway because it is practical, visible, and skill-building.

Participants develop transferable skills such as time management, teamwork, safety awareness, decision-making, and equipment operation. Visiting the same sites regularly allows workers to see the improvement in their work, building pride and confidence.

Durban has seen this confidence translate into stronger engagement on site, consistent contributions to presentation standards, and improved morale across the broader team.

What Impact Has the Partnership Had?

The collaboration has created meaningful opportunities for participants to develop skills, gain independence, and feel included. Families have seen increased pride and confidence in their loved ones, and the wider community benefits from a more inclusive workplace that values contribution over labels.

From Durban’s side, the partnership has also strengthened leadership, adaptability, and communication skills within the broader crew. Inclusion hasn’t diluted performance — it has enhanced it.

A Message to Other Businesses

Owen’s advice to businesses unsure about inclusive employment is clear:

“Simply give us a go. Our work quality speaks for itself. By creating opportunity, businesses help break down the discrimination many people with disabilities face every day.”

Durban’s perspective aligns strongly with that message. Inclusive employment works best when businesses focus on capability, commit to support structures, and approach partnerships with intention and openness.

Looking Ahead

Durban’s long-term vision is to continue growing the partnership with C2A by expanding skill development, increasing responsibility, and creating sustainable employment pathways — all while maintaining the high standards!

This partnership isn’t just about grounds maintenance. It’s about building confidence, creating opportunity, and strengthening culture — on and off site.

We’re proud of what we’ve achieved together, and even more excited about what’s ahead.

Until next time — keep opening doors, keep building futures, and keep growing together.
