The Dirt: Durban Steps Into the Future – Demoing the Kress Voyager

At Durban, we’re always looking for ways to do things better — smarter, safer, and more efficiently. That’s why the team recently had the opportunity to demo the Kress Voyager autonomous robotic mower… and it’s safe to say, this isn’t just a new tool — it’s a glimpse into the future of our industry.

Not Your Average Mower

The Kress Voyager is a fully autonomous, commercial-grade robotic mower designed specifically for large-scale environments like councils, corporate sites, business parks, and high-traffic precincts — the kind of spaces Durban works in every day.

Unlike traditional mowers, the Voyager doesn’t rely on manual operation. Once the site is digitally mapped using RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) positioning, the machine can mow with incredible precision — following planned routes, adjusting in real time, and operating independently.

This means:

  • Consistent cutting patterns
  • Reduced overlap and missed areas
  • Maximum efficiency across large open spaces

Smart Technology in Action

What really stood out during the demo was the level of intelligence built into the machine.

The Voyager uses a combination of:

  • RTK satellite navigation for centimetre-level accuracy
  • LiDAR and camera systems to detect obstacles
  • Ultrasonic sensors for real-time awareness
  • Cloud connectivity for monitoring, updates, and control

It’s constantly scanning its surroundings, adapting to changes, and making decisions — all without direct human input.

For busy environments this level of awareness is critical. It allows the mower to safely operate around people, infrastructure, and unpredictable conditions.

Safety First — Always

At Durban, safety is non-negotiable — and the Voyager aligns strongly with that.

The system is designed with multiple safety layers, including:

  • Obstacle detection and automatic stopping
  • Geofencing to ensure it stays within designated areas
  • Remote monitoring capabilities
  • Real-time alerts and diagnostics

It’s built not just to perform — but to operate safely in real-world environments where safety standards must be met at all times.

What This Means for Our Teams

Let’s be clear — this isn’t about replacing people.

It’s about empowering our crews to work smarter.

By taking over repetitive mowing tasks, technology like the Voyager allows our teams to:

  • Focus on detailed work like edging, pruning, weed management and presentation
  • Improve productivity across sites
  • Reduce fatigue and physical strain
  • Spend more time on quality finishes that clients notice

It changes the role of the team — from operators to managers of smarter systems.

Sustainability & Efficiency

The Voyager is also a big step forward in sustainability.

Being fully electric, it:

  • Reduces fuel use and emissions
  • Operates quieter than traditional machinery
  • Supports environmentally responsible site management

For Durban, this aligns directly with our commitment to environmental responsibility and smarter resource use.

A Glimpse Into the Future

This demo wasn’t just about testing a new machine — it was about understanding where the industry is heading.

Automation, electrification, and data-driven operations are becoming the new standard. And for companies like us at Durban, staying ahead means being open to innovation while maintaining the high standards we’re known for.

Innovation Backed by Values

No matter how advanced the technology becomes, one thing doesn’t change — our people are at the centre of everything we do.

With Durban’s core values of:

  • Teamwork
  • Respect
  • Integrity
  • Quality of Work
  • Safety

…we’re in a strong position to adopt new technology while continuing to deliver the level of service our clients expect.

Because innovation isn’t about replacing what works — it’s about making it better.

What’s Next?

The Voyager has given us a lot to think about — and we’re excited about the role technology like this could play in shaping the future of our operations.

This is just the beginning for us, so watch this space!

Until next time — keep innovating, keep improving, and keep growing the Durban way.
