Across Durban, we spend our days caring for landscapes, protecting green spaces, and thinking about the future of the environment around us.
But some of the most important work starts much earlier — with the next generation.
That’s why, for the third year running, Durban has proudly participated in Book Week through our Durban Trailblazers initiative, creating and donating educational book packs focused on sustainability, the environment, biodiversity, recycling, habitats, composting, native plants, and caring for the world around us.
And judging by the growing stacks of books, plushies, and beautifully packed boxes… we may have gone a little overboard this year.
In the best possible way.
Books With a Bigger Purpose
Each Durban Trailblazers pack is carefully put together with books that are fun, colourful, and engaging — but also carry an important message.
From books about reducing, reusing and recycling, to stories about planting seeds, protecting wildlife, composting, habitats, native plants, and understanding the natural world, every pack is designed to spark curiosity.
Because when children are introduced to these ideas early, sustainability stops feeling like a complicated adult concept.
It becomes normal.
It becomes something they understand.
And most importantly, it becomes something they can be part of.
Why Start With Little People?
Children are naturally curious.
They ask questions, notice tiny details adults often miss, and have an incredible ability to absorb new ideas.
That is exactly why environmental education at a young age is so powerful.
When a child learns why bees matter, why rubbish should not end up in waterways, why native plants support wildlife, or why we should reuse something instead of throwing it away, those lessons can stay with them for life.
It is not about placing the weight of the world on young shoulders.
It is about giving children the knowledge and confidence to understand that their choices matter!
A child who learns to care for a tiny seed today may grow into an adult who cares deeply about the environment tomorrow.
Planting Ideas, Not Just Trees
At Durban, we often talk about planting for the future — but that does not only mean trees and gardens.
Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can plant is an idea.
An idea about caring for wildlife.
An idea about wasting less.
An idea about looking after the places we live.
An idea that even one person can make a difference.
Those ideas grow.
Children take them home, talk about them with their families, share them at school, and begin seeing the environment differently.
That ripple effect is exactly what Durban Trailblazers is about.
Making Learning Fun
Of course, we wanted the packs to feel exciting too.
Alongside a whole range of environmental and sustainability books, we added fun little extras and presented everything in colourful gift boxes — because learning should feel like an adventure, not homework.
Our goal was simple:
Open the box. Get excited. Pick up a book. Learn something new.
If one book inspires one child to plant something, recycle more, ask a question about wildlife, or look after their local environment a little differently, then the initiative has already done something worthwhile.
Three Years of Trailblazing
This year marks Durban’s third year participating in Book Week, and seeing the Trailblazers initiative continue to grow is something we are incredibly proud of.
What started as a simple idea has become a tradition that reflects so much of what Durban stands for — community, education, sustainability, and leaving a positive impact beyond the sites we maintain.
We want young Australians to grow up understanding that the environment is not something separate from us.
It is where we live.
It is the air we breathe.
It is the wildlife around us.
It is the parks we play in, the trees that shade us, and the ecosystems we all rely on.
And protecting it starts with understanding it.
A Huge Thank You to Abigail
A very special thank you goes to Abigail at Durban, who was the driving force behind bringing this year’s Trailblazers book packs to life.
From sourcing and organising the books, to putting together each pack with care and making sure everything came together beautifully, Abigail made it happen.
Initiatives like this take time, thought, and plenty of behind-the-scenes effort, and we’re incredibly grateful for the energy and heart she put into it.

The Next Generation of Trailblazers
The future of our environment will eventually be placed in the hands of today’s children.
So we believe it is worth investing in their curiosity now.
Through stories, education, creativity, and a little bit of fun, Durban Trailblazers aims to help raise a generation that is thoughtful about its impact, proud to care for the environment, and confident that even small actions can create positive change.
Because little minds grow into big thinkers.
And big change often starts with a very small seed.
