At Durban Landscaping & Garden Maintenance, learning never stops — especially when it comes to keeping our people safe, skilled, and prepared for anything the job can throw at us.

Recently, the Durban crew came together for our Annual Refresher Training Day, packed with First Aid & CPR recertification, practical workshops, professional development sessions, great food, and plenty of laughs along the way.

And while there may have been a few questionable CPR dummies getting over-enthusiastic compressions… the day reinforced something incredibly important:

Knowledge saves lives.

First Aid & CPR – Skills That Matter

Every year, the Durban team completes refresher training in First Aid and CPR to ensure our crews remain confident and capable in emergency situations.

In an industry like grounds maintenance, where crews work with machinery, tools, traffic, weather, and physical environments daily, these skills are essential — not optional.

To make the training as practical and effective as possible, we bring in a third-party training organisation that delivers hands-on, relatable scenarios based on real-life situations our crews could encounter on site. This approach helps ensure our team isn’t just ticking boxes — they’re genuinely prepared to respond confidently when it matters most.

And the reality is, these skills have already come in handy for our crews on multiple occasions over the years.

Whether it’s responding to cuts, incidents on site, heat stress, or supporting someone while waiting for emergency services, having trained team members on hand can make all the difference in those critical moments.

At Durban, safety goes far beyond paperwork and procedures — it’s about making sure our people feel prepared, capable, and empowered to step up when it matters most.

Practical Workshops – Real Skills for Real Sites

The day wasn’t just classroom-based either.

Crews also got hands-on with practical workshops focused on:

  • Fixing tyre punctures in the field
  • Reporting expectations and site communication
  • Best-practice operational procedures
  • Understanding the importance of accurate reporting and documentation

Because let’s be honest — nothing ruins a day faster than a flat tyre at the wrong time.

These sessions gave the team the opportunity to sharpen practical problem-solving skills, ask questions, and share knowledge from real experiences on site.

More Than Training – Bringing the Team Together

One of the best parts of the day was simply having everyone together in one place.

With crews often spread across multiple sites throughout Melbourne, refresher days like this are a great opportunity to reconnect, share stories, learn from one another, and strengthen the culture that makes Durban what it is.

There were plenty of laughs, good banter, and a few competitive moments mixed in throughout the workshops — alongside some seriously good food that kept everyone fuelled for the day.

Moments like these remind us that training isn’t just about compliance — it’s about building stronger teams and creating a workplace where people feel supported, connected, and invested in.

Why It Matters

At Durban, we believe professional development and safety training are investments in our people.

The more knowledge, confidence, and practical skills our crews have, the stronger and safer our operations become.

It’s also part of our commitment to our core values:

  • Teamwork
  • Respect
  • Integrity
  • Quality of Work
  • Safety

Because the best teams never stop learning.

Looking Ahead

As Durban continues to grow, so does our commitment to keeping our crews trained, prepared, and supported — both professionally and personally.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated, contributed, and helped make the day such a success.

And to the crew who absolutely attacked the CPR mannequins like they were training for the Olympics… maybe ease up slightly next year.

Until next time — keep learning, keep supporting each other, and keep growing the Durban way.
