At Durban, we care deeply about the wellbeing of our team – not just as colleagues, but as people. Our work may be in gardens and grounds, but we know that healthy spaces start with healthy people. That’s why we embraced this year’s R U OK? Day with open arms, hosting a fun and meaningful workshop built around the theme: “I’m here to hear.”
Listening is one of the most powerful tools we have – it’s simple, yet so often overlooked. Truly listening means putting distractions aside, giving someone your full attention, and letting them know that what they say matters. Whether it’s a teammate, a friend, or a family member, those moments of connection can change someone’s day, and sometimes even their life.
By taking part in activities that encouraged us to slow down, share, and listen deeply, we not only strengthened our workplace bonds but also reminded ourselves of the role each of us can play in supporting those around us.
Connecting in Pairs, Groups & as One
Our R U OK? Day workshop was filled with laughs, surprises, and plenty of “aha!” moments. We kicked things off with a fun back-to-back guessing game (imagine trying to describe a dog in sunnies on a surfboard!!) that reminded us how tricky – and important – good listening can be.
From there, we explored this year’s theme “I’m Here to Hear” with a short video from Galen Emanuel before diving into listening circles. With prompt cards in hand, groups answered fun questions like ‘What would you do if you struck it rich in the lottery?’The ideas were wild and wonderful – from world travel to setting up trust funds – but the best part wasn’t the answers. It was the magic of being heard without interruption. We walked away not just laughing, but with a stronger sense of connection and appreciation for one another.
Things got even more lively during our Hearing Quest, where we uncovered new things about our teammates – from favourite mood-boosting music, to favourite colours, to weekend routines, to the stories of how they first began in our industry. Sharing those discoveries as a team sparked plenty of smiles (and a few surprises!).
We also created an “I Hear You Pledge Wall”, filling it with sticky-note pledges like “I’m here to hear when you’re stressed” and “Your voice matters here”. These pledges now hang proudly in our workspaces as a daily reminder to keep listening with care.
To finish off the day on a high, we introduced something special this year – the Legend Award. This went to the teammate who showed the most compassion, energy, and heart throughout the workshop. We’re proud to say the very first award went to Lachy, who really gave it his all and reminded us what it means to show up for one another. A well-deserved legend!
Why It Matters
At Durban, we believe mental health is just as important as physical health. Events like R U OK? Day remind us to slow down, check in with those around us, and create safe spaces where people feel comfortable to talk and be listened to.
By taking part in activities that broke down barriers and encouraged honest conversation, we’re nurturing a culture where asking “Are you OK?” – and really listening to the answer – is part of everyday life.
A Fun, Meaningful Day
What made the workshop truly special was the balance of fun and depth. We laughed, we learned, and we left the day feeling more connected than ever before.
R U OK? Day isn’t about one day a year – it’s a reminder that every day is a chance to check in on the people around us. And at Durban, we’re proud to say: we’re here to hear.
Until next time – keep asking, keep listening, and keep looking out for one another 💛
